Lane's End to be new Curlin home

11/21/2008 - Louisville, KY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending Horse of the Year Curlin will stand his stud service at Lane's End Farm near Versailles, KY. The announcement was made in a press release by the farm.

Curlin, the richest racehorse in North American history, will stand for $75,000 in 2009. The colt is 80-percent owned by Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Farm and has been recently appraised for $20 million. Jackson is attempting to purchase the remaining 20-percent interest in Curlin.

"The Jacksons are due great credit for allowing our sport to enjoy this great champion as a four-year-old," said Will Farish of Lane's End. "Many would have retired him after winning the Breeders' Cup Classic and Horse of the Year honors as a three-year-old. Curlin's performance on the track, his pedigree, and his conformation make him the most exciting sire prospect to retire in many years. We are honored to have him join his champion sire Smart Strike at Lane's End."

Curlin has career earnings of $10,501,800, posting winnings of better than $5 million as both a three and four-year-old. Trained by Steve Asmussen, he won 11 of 16 career starts.

As a three-year-old in 2007 Curlin won the Arkansas Derby, Preakness Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, along with the Breeders' Cup Classic, and was voted Horse of the Year as well as champion male three-year-old.

This year the colt won the Dubai World Cup, Stephen Foster and Woodward Handicaps and a second Jockey Club Gold Cup. His final race was the 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic where he finished fourth to Raven's Pass.

"After a stellar racing career, Curlin is now in a position to carry on his iron horse bloodlines at Lane's End, the premier stallion farm in the nation," said majority owner Jess Jackson. "He is one of the best examples of the breed--fast, strong, and durable. I predict he will make a substantial contribution to our sport through his gene pool and I am looking forward to seeing his foals compete and possibly exceed his unequaled race record."

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
